The Hunt for the Higgs Boson

Hunt for Higgs 24th October 2012Wednesday 24th October 7.30pm
The Green House Hotel,  4 Grove Road, Bournemouth BH1 3AX

The amazing story of the elusive ‘God Particle’

In this illustrated presentation, scientist Chris Street, who recently visited the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, recounts the discovery of the Higgs Boson, and how it provides a giant leap forward in our understanding of the universe.

Chris will also explain the nature of the Higgs Boson, why scientists are so excited about it, why it was called the 'God Particle', and how it gives mass to everything, as well as providing us with key highlights of the fifty year search for the ‘Holy Grail’ of particle physics.

Join us for “A fascinating introduction to the story behind the resolution of one of science’s greatest mysteries”

Chris Street is a founder member of Humanists4Science, and Dorset Humanists’ Education Officer.

Science and Religion: Complementary or Contradictory?

Science & ReligionSaturday 13th October 2.00pm
Moordown Community Centre, Coronation Avenue, Moordown, Bournemouth BH9 1TW

A presentation by government scientist, David Nunn

Since the enlightenment, science has relentlessly marched into territories formerly occupied by religion.

Particle physicist, outspoken atheist, and author, Victor Stenger states, “Scientists have practical reasons for wishing that religion and science be kept separate” . In this interactive session, David will investigate whether these apparently conflicting worldviews can be reconciled. He will consider the origins and evolution of both worldviews, and offer some fun approaches to resolving this problem. We hope this will produce interesting results, and perhaps even provide an answer to this age old dilemma!

Join us for “a great opportunity to open our minds to different ways of approaching this often controversial subject”

September Bulletin and Newsletter

DW 6298984 (crop) We are extremely sad to report the death of Dennis Bannister in this month's bulletin.  We publish tributes to him, and provide details of his funeral ceremony on Thursday 6th September.

Also in this month's bulletin, details of our forthcoming events and news of a Secular March in London, a more extensive article on our visit to a school in Salisbury, and a controversial letter on whether Humanists should be militant.  In Chairman's View I respond to the question of militancy, and I also review the former Bishop of Edinburgh's recent memoir.

Our new 'One Life' course on Humanism and Atheism is nearly full, so if you'd like to come along you'd better hurry!

We look forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes,
David Warden
