Events Programme Update

DH Events Prog Jun-Sept 15 (Front)Dorset Humanists’ latest events programme is now available for download. This issue covers the period through to the first half of September 2015. As always, it includes stimulating presentations and discussions covering a wide range of topics with a great line-up of guest speakers, and we hope you’ll find many events that you’d like to attend.

Everyone is welcome to join us at our public events whether they are a member or not, so if you enjoy discussing some or all of these topics with like-minded people please come along. Our members and visitors are people with lively minds who want to learn, explore, discuss and debate, while ensuring our society is guided by sound values based on reason, evidence and compassion. We hope finding a group such as ours will also be a source of great friendship and fun!

Dorset Humanists is entirely funded by voluntary donations from our members and visitors, so if you enjoy our events and share our aims and values, please help us continue our activities by paying our optional annual membership fee of £12 (Students £5). Membership also enables you to participate in determining future group activities, vote on constitutional issues, and elect committee members.

To join us, pick up a membership form at one of our meetings, or see our website.

Humanists for a Better World: Global Problems – Why Bother?

Wednesday 22nd July 7.30pm
The Green House Hotel,  4 Grove Road, Bournemouth BH1 3AX

With Humanists for a Better World’ co-founder Marilyn Mason

Humanists have always been concerned about global problems such as human rights abuses, poverty, wars, hunger, and exploitation of the poor, yet globally there remains much to be done, and despite public statements to the contrary, issues such as climate change and environmental sustainability remain low priorities for most UK politicians. Humanism is a worldview which inspires considered action, and Marilyn Mason will explain why she thinks humanists should get involved in changing things for the better, and how she co-founded Humanists for a Better World to encourage not just more discussion and information-sharing, but more collective humanist action too. Marilyn will be focussing on the positive actions we can take communally, politically and as individuals.

Marilyn Mason was the British Humanist Association’s first ever Education Officer. She co-founded Humanists for a Better World, represents the British Humanist Association in the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, and is on the steering group of Transition Town Kingston.

Understanding Islam: The Qur’an

Understanding Islam - Quran 24 June 2015Wednesday 24th June 7.30pm
The Green House Hotel,  4 Grove Road, Bournemouth BH1 3AX

With Jonathan MS Pearce and David Warden.

In the aftermath of the World Trade Centre attacks, President George W. Bush characterised Islam as a religion of peace, and politicians have continued to publicly maintain the benign nature of the religion following other more recent atrocities by Islamists. Many people agree with this belief, noting that the vast majority of Muslims live peaceful lives, but others counter that the roots of Islam include violent leaders, teachings and scripture.

So what is ‘the real Islam’? Is true Islam a force for good, and if so, how did it give rise to the revolutionary ideology of Islamism?

Author and blogger Jonathan MS Pearce and Chair of Dorset Humanists David Warden will each present a paper exploring ‘the real Islam’ and consider the prospects for more liberal interpretations of the religion with particular reference to the text of the Quran.

“A thought-provoking examination of the nature of Islam”

Free entry (donations appreciated).     Everyone welcome!

Jonathan M.S. Pearce is a teacher from South Hampshire, UK, who has dedicated many years to studying all manner of things philosophical and theological. With a Masters in Philosophy from the University of Wales, Trinity St David, he also holds a degree from the University of Leeds, and a PGCE from Southampton. His published books include ‘Free Will? and ‘The Little Book of Unholy Questions’, ‘Twins: A Survival Guide for Dads’ and ‘The Nativity: A Critical Examination’.
