Earth Charter & Bournemouth Transition Town - a Sustainable Future?

At Dorset Humanists today, Theresa McManus introduced us to the Earth Charter & Bournemouth Transition Town projects. Members discussed how the Earth Charter related to Humanistic ideas. We talked about how the Bournemouth Air Festival could be reconciled with a 'green' Bournemouth. The Earth Charter has 16 principles and 4 'Pillars':


I. RESPECT AND CARE FOR THE COMMUNITY OF LIFE
II. ECOLOGICAL INTEGRITY
III. SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
IV. DEMOCRACY, NONVIOLENCE, AND PEACE




The potential population crisis is covered by Principle 7. Adopt patterns of production, consumption, and reproduction that safeguard Earth's regenerative capacities, human rights, and community well-being.
