Dorset Humanists is a community group which has provided a friendly meeting place for non-religious people in Bournemouth and surrounding areas for over twenty years. We have established ourselves as a respected voice for reason and humanity, and Humanists UK has recognised that we are one of its most successful partner groups. None of this would be possible without the loyalty and support of our subscribing members and so, as a ‘thank you’, we are providing a complimentary buffet lunch prior to our AGM. Visitors and non-members are also very welcome to attend but we ask for a £3.00 donation for lunch – or you can join Dorset Humanists on the day!

Our AGM is a sociable, enjoyable, and sometimes controversial event. Please join us to have your say on the future of Dorset Humanists. Lunch is at 1.15pm and our AGM starts at 2.15pm. Stories from Deep Time (The Etches Collection)

With Palaeontologist Steve Etches MBE

Amateur palaeontologist Steve Etches has spent more than 30 years creating the finest single collection of Late Jurassic era fossils ever assembled in Britain, many of which are new to science and are of great palaeontological importance. This extraordinary collection of more than 2,200 fossils includes the world’s best examples of fossilised ammonite eggs, a two-metre-long Pliosaur jaw, a Pterosaur skull, and an Icthyosaur with its belly still full of fish and squid.

Our Kimmeridgian Jurassic experience will begin with a buffet lunch provided by Clavells Café, followed by a fascinating talk from Steve Etches on the most important specimens in his collection. This will provide a unique and exciting insight into the lives of many Late Jurassic marine creatures. The £15 cost per person includes talk, buffet lunch and museum entry (transport not included). Annual General Meeting 2017

At our AGM we celebrate the highlights of the past year, and renew and refresh our sense of belonging to a stimulating and engaging community group. We value your views and opinions, and our AGM enables our members to determine the future growth and development of Dorset Humanists, so please do come along and take part. 

We hope you will also be able to join us for a complimentary celebratory lunch for our subscribing members at 1.15pm prior to the meeting beginning at 2.15pm (non-members are also welcome to join us for the meal, but there will be a small charge of £3 to help with costs – or you can become a member on the day).
This year’s AGM business will include discussing and voting on three resolutions, including one on our future event entrance pricing, so do join us to have your say. Predatory Dinosaurs and the Evolution of Birds

Celebrate Darwin Day in style with a delicious three course buffet lunch in BIC’s Purbeck Lounge, followed by a fascinating presentation by palaeontologist Darren Naish.

Recent discoveries of a wealth of fossil feathered dinosaurs and early birds have helped scientists show how birds emerged as the end-products of a sustained phase of miniaturisation within theropods, which enabled this group to be the only dinosaur lineage to survive and thrive beyond the Cretaceous mass extinction event around 66 million years ago. 

In addition to explaining how birds evolved, Darren will also consider the diversity, anatomy, biology and behaviour of some of the most awe-inspiring predators ever to walk the earth. These include spinosaurs, allosaurs and tyrannosaurs, as well as the remarkable scythe-clawed therizinosaurs and sickle-clawed dromaeosaurs. 

Darren Naish is a vertebrate palaeontologist whose technical work mainly covers theropod (beast-footed) and sauropod (lizard-footed) dinosaurs. His best-selling books include Walking with Dinosaurs: the Evidence and The Great Dinosaur Discoveries.

Singer-songwriter Shelley Segal at Bournemouth Sunday Assembly on 26th October 2014

Bournemouth Sunday Assembly are delighted to announce that Australian singer-songwriter Shelley Segal will be performing for them at their service on Sunday 26th October.

Shelley accompanies her “mercurial voice” on acoustic guitar and her songs contain an eclectic mix of “brilliant pop melodies”, intimate story-telling and biographical lyrics. She has been performing original music internationally for the last twelve years, and recorded her first EP in 2009. In 2012 she released her forthright, ‘An Atheist Album’, a folk-pop protest record that embodies her thoughts on religion and highlighted her versatility as a singer and song writer. The album rapidly gained her a following among the international atheist movement.

The theme for this month’s Sunday Assembly is "Helping each other grow", and as always they will have a guest speaker, and a selection of awesome songs to sing along with. They will also be collecting food for a local food bank, so if you are able to spare any dried or tinned food, it will be much appreciated.

Sunday Assembly’s motto is “Live Better - Help Often - Wonder More”. Their aim is to have “all the best bits of church without the religion”, but they qualify this to include everyone, whatever their beliefs may be, by stating “we don’t do religion, but we don’t mind if you”.

We understand that the local groups’ first Sunday Assembly on 28th September was both well attended and well received, and we wish them every success in the future.

Sunday Assembly (aka “Atheist* Church”) comes to Bournemouth

Bournemouth Sunday Assembly’s Inaugural Event

September 28th 2014 will be an important day for Sunday Assembly!

Across the world, many new Assemblies will be launching and thousands of people will be coming together to celebrate being alive. Thousands of people who didn’t know each other before will be coming together to form new communities, and the great news is one of them is in Bournemouth!

Sunday Assembly was founded in London in January 2013 by comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans as “all the best bits of church but without the religion, and with awesome pop songs too”. “We are dedicated to helping the people that attend, and the folk in the wider community, to make the most of this one life that we know we have”. “We harness fun, joy and wonder to build communities and to help others”.

Sunday Assembly is for everyone who wants to:

•  Live Better. We aim to provide inspiring, thought-provoking and practical ideas that help people to live the lives they want to lead and be the people they want to be
•  Help Often. Assemblies are communities of action, building lives of purpose, encouraging us all to help anyone who needs it to support each other
•  Wonder More. Hearing talks, singing, listening to readings and even playing games helps us to connect with each other and the awesome world we live in.

Each service is based around a theme, with a guest speaker, poets and/or comedians and some great pop songs. The theme of the first assembly will be ‘community’.

* Please note that although Sunday Assemblies are regularly referred to as ‘atheist churches’ by the media, Sunday Assemblies welcome everyone, regardless of any theological beliefs they may have.

Morality Debate & Cream Tea

If God does not exist, what basis is there for morality and ethics?

Should we base our lives on doing good for others, or on pursuing our own self-interest? In this combined debate and summer social event, four members of Dorset Humanists will debate the motion “Self-interest is the best basis for morality.”

 

The debate will be followed by                                                                a delicious home-baked cream tea.

Come along and join us for a thought provoking afternoon and a tasty cream tea (£2.50 charge for cream tea).
