God on Trial: The Case for God Examined

Bournemouth Student Humanists and Atheists Society have kindly invited us to a retitled repeat of author, blogger and philosopher Jonathan Pearce's entertaining and thought-provoking 'Unholy Questions' presentation. If you missed it last time, or would enjoy experiencing it again, this is an excellent opportunity to hear this popular speaker in action, and gain some new insights on the question of God's existence.

Jonathan will be skilfully guiding us through a range of arguments for and against the existence of God. He will also offer some novel arguments that challenge the concept of an omniscient, omnipotent, omni-benevolent God. With Bournemouth University having quite an active Christian Union, we're expecting a robust Q&A session after Jonathan's presentation, so this should be a really enjoyable evening for everyone with an interest in the God debate.

Jonathan is a teacher and author from South Hampshire, who has dedicated many years of his life to all manner of things philosophical and theological. He is the author of several popular books including ‘The Nativity: A Critical Examination’, ‘Free Will? An investigation into whether we have free will, or whether I was always going to write this book’, and ‘The Little Book of Unholy Questions’. As an interlude from writing about philosophy and theology, he has also written a book of advice for dads of twins; Twins: A Survival Guide for Dads. He is a founder member of the Tippling Philosophers, a friendly group of disparate believers and non-believers based in Hampshire, and is also a founder author for the Skeptic Ink Network (SIN), an online community of skeptic writers, bloggers, academics, thinkers and activists. Debate: Did Jesus Really Exist?

Once again, we are very pleased to be the guests of Bournemouth Student Humanists and Atheists Society in their second ‘Big Debate’.  Most people take it for granted that Jesus of Nazareth was at least a real historical figure, but this assumption is increasingly being questioned by a number of scholars. We hope this debate will provide an excellent introduction to the arguments both for and against believing in the historicity of Jesus, as we go head-to-head with a team from Moorlands College of Christian Theology.
We are looking forward to plenty of lively debate followed by a Q&A session in which you will have your own opportunity to question the teams on this fascinating subject.

'A Tour Through The Universe in Space and Time' followed by Star Gazing

Bournemouth Student Humanist and Atheists Society (BSHAS) have kindly invited Dorset Humanists’ members and supporters to attend their next meeting.
BSHAS have booked Chairman of the Wessex Astronomical Society, Bob Mizon MBE to give a talk entitled, 'A Tour Through The Universe In Space And Time'. Weather permitting, this will be followed by 'a night site tour' where we will walk down to the cliff top, and Bob will point out some interesting features of the night sky.
In his presentation, Bob will take us on a journey from Planet Earth, via the Moon and the Solar System, out to the furthest reaches of space, pausing to investigate some of the marvels of its content and history - and explaining how stars are so relevant to our lives and existence.
BU Business Centre reception will be able to tell you which lecture theatre to go to. The listed end time is approximate and you are welcome to attend Bob's presentation (circa 60 minutes) whether or not you wish to go 'star gazing' afterwards.
Since 1996, Bob has provided a full-time mobile planetarium service to south central England, and has taken the experience of the night sky to nearly 80,000 people, mostly schoolchildren. He is also coordinator of the Campaign for Dark Skies and is the author of 'Light Pollution: Responses and Remedies' which is part of Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series. He is also the author of the annual offering: 'Stargazers' Almanac: A Monthly Guide to the Stars and Planets [Calendar]'. He was awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to astronomy.
