Anthropogenic climate change is now accepted by virtually all credible scientists in the relevant fields. Professor of Physical Oceanography Meric Srokosz will be exploring the role of the oceans in climate and climate change, and explaining how the earth’s climate is actually changing and the consequent effects. Points of interest in this presentation will include the impact of sea level rises, the potential changes in global weather patterns, and a look at the effect of ocean acidification. All of these factors could have dramatic effects on both marine ecosystems and human populations, so it is essential that we gain a fuller understanding of them and work together to limit environmental damage.

Professor of Physical Oceanography Meric Srokosz coordinates the Rapid Climate Change programme looking at how changes in the north Atlantic circulation will affect UK and northwest European climate.

According to the World Wildlife Fund’s ‘Living Planet Report’ 2014, we now consume 50% more resources than the natural world can replace. This problem is exacerbated as we deplete our energy resources and fresh water supplies, and global warming starts to make food production more difficult. Unless we take action now, we could witness major world-wide disruption and suffering. In this thought-provoking presentation Eric Rimmer will provide us with a wealth of information on the crucial issues of the 21st century including overpopulation, overconsumption, food production and water distribution, and explain how a truly sustainable society could be achieved.

Population Matters is a charity concerned with population size, environmental sustainability, family planning, sex education, and women’s empowerment.

Creating a Better World for Animals and People

A presentation by John Berry from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)

IFAW works to improve the welfare of animals by reducing commercial exploitation, protecting wildlife habitats, and promoting conservation policies that advance the well-being of both animals and people.

John will focus on three key projects in Southern Africa and India, as well as providing an overview of the group’s other activities around the world that include relocating animals in natural disasters, and protecting endangered species from poachers.
